Paris Prosecutor's Office Opens Probe into Alleged Illegal Financing of Le Pen's Campaign
The Paris prosecutor's office has launched a preliminary investigation into allegations of illegal financing of Marine Le Pen's campaign for the 2022 presidential election. The investigation follows a report by the National Commission on Campaign Accounts and Political Financing (CNCCFP), which scrutinizes candidates' election expenses and funding.
The probe will look into allegations of embezzlement, forgery, fraud, and the acceptance of a loan by a candidate on an electoral campaign. Le Pen and her party, the National Rally (RN), have previously denied any wrongdoing in connection with campaign financing. The RN has not yet responded to requests for comment.
This investigation is separate from another case in which Le Pen is due to stand trial later this year alongside 27 others over alleged misuse of European Union funds. That investigation, opened in 2016, aimed to determine whether the then National Front had used money intended for EU parliamentary assistants to pay staff who were working for the party.
Le Pen, who led the RN until 2021, ran against Emmanuel Macron in the 2017 and 2022 presidential elections and could potentially run again in 2027.
