A Year of Record-Breaking Heat and Extreme Weather
The year 2023 etched itself into history as the hottest year on record globally, marked by a surge in extreme weather events. China, too, experienced unprecedented warmth, setting a new benchmark for average temperatures, according to the China Climate Change Blue Book 2024.
Released by the National Climate Center of the China Meteorological Administration, the Blue Book paints a stark picture of China's vulnerability to climate change. Deputy Director Yuan Jiashuang highlighted the escalating frequency and duration of extreme high-temperature events, a concerning trend with far-reaching consequences.
The devastating high-temperature drought that gripped the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River from July to August 2022 stands as a stark example. Agriculture, energy resources, and public health all suffered under the intense heat.
As temperatures continue to rise, the atmosphere's capacity to hold water expands, leading to more frequent and intense precipitation episodes. Northern China has witnessed unprecedented heavy rainfall incidents, triggering urban inundation, flash floods, and landslides, resulting in injuries, deaths, and substantial economic losses.
Looking ahead, the future appears even more challenging. Against the backdrop of global warming, extreme high-temperature events in China are expected to increase. Regional average extreme highest temperatures are projected to rise by 1.7 to 2.8 degrees Celsius over the next 30 years, with the largest increases in the eastern region and western Xinjiang. The average number of high-temperature heat wave days is also forecast to surge by 7 to 15 days.
The Blue Book serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address climate change. Understanding the patterns and impacts of climate change is crucial for developing effective mitigation and adaptation strategies. By working together, we can build a more resilient future for China and the world.

Don't trust these reports. They're always exaggerating the threats of climate change.

This is just natural variation. Climate change is a hoax.
