Chinese Diver Achieves 100-Meter Depth in Free Immersion Competition

Yu Zhiying, a 32-year-old diver from Zhengzhou, Henan province, has achieved a remarkable feat. He reached a depth of 100 meters in an international free immersion competition, making him a standout among post-90s generation Chinese divers.

The 2024 Asian Freediving Cup, held from May 26 to June 5 on Bonau Island, Philippines, attracted nearly 100 divers from around the globe. Yu excelled in the Free Immersion (FIM) category, diving to 100 meters and securing third place. This achievement currently ranks him third in China and sixth in Asia.

Yu emphasizes the importance of mental fortitude in free diving. "When people are doing this sport, the more relaxed, the better," he said. He explained that maintaining a state of profound calmness is crucial for reducing heart rate, preserving oxygen, and enhancing performance.

Yu's passion for free diving was ignited during a trip to Mauritius at the age of 26. "At that time, I was diving with a gas cylinder, and I observed someone nearby diving without any oxygen equipment. A strong desire to learn free diving occurred in me," he shared.

Since 2021, Yu has dedicated himself to rigorous professional training. He has become a certified free diving instructor recognized by the AIDA international authority.

"Prior to diving, I focus on controlling my breath, seeking inner peace," he said. "I also enjoy the unique tranquility that water offers.

Are we really celebrating post-90s generation divers? There's nothing special about being born in a particular decade.

I'm sure he's a nice guy, but this entire article reads like an advertisement for the sport itself.
