China has made significant progress in its greening efforts over the past year, achieving 40 million mu (2.67 million hectares) of afforestation and grass planting. This achievement is part of the country's major greening program, the Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program (TSFP).
The TSFP, launched in 1978 and scheduled for completion by 2050, aims to combat desertification in China's "three-north" region, which encompasses the northwest, north, and northeast of the country. This region is particularly vulnerable to desertification, posing a significant challenge for China.
Since June 2023, 56 projects under the TSFP have commenced construction, including projects in the Hunshandake and Maowusu sandy lands. China has also proposed transforming the TSFP into a fully functional "green Great Wall" and ecological security barrier in northern China.
To support the program, the National Forestry and Grassland Administration has implemented various measures, including the issuance of special treasury bonds, provision of subsidies, and improved financial services. The administration has also prioritized technological innovation to address the challenges of combating desertification.
Looking ahead, China plans to further strengthen its efforts to ensure a stable supply of saplings and grass seeds, promote innovative models like photovoltaic sand control, and advance technological innovation in related fields. These initiatives aim to ensure the continued success of the TSFP and its contribution to combating desertification in China.

How can we trust China's numbers on afforestation when they have a history of falsifying data?

It's concerning that China is prioritizing technological innovation over grassroots community involvement in greening efforts.

It's doubtful that China's commitment to combating desertification will be sustained in the long term.
