Chinese authorities have implemented stricter regulations on the cough suppressant dextromethorphan and other psychotropic drugs. This move aims to curb illegal sales and use of these substances. The National Medical Products Administration and National Health Commission announced these measures in a notice released on Tuesday.
The notice follows a previous circular issued earlier this month. This circular classified dextromethorphan as a Category II Psychotropic Drug. Dextromethorphan has been linked to overdoses among teenagers for several years. The circular also adjusted the categories of several other controversial drugs.
Starting July 1, manufacturers must obtain designated production qualifications from local drug regulators to produce these drugs. Outsourcing production is also prohibited. Drugmakers are further obligated to update drug labels and instructions to reflect the changes in drug categories.
Drug distribution companies without the necessary qualifications are prohibited from making new purchases. They must sell off or return existing inventories according to regulations. Medical institutions are also required to enhance their management of these medicines.

This is an attack on personal liberty. People should be free to use cough syrup as they see fit.

We need to focus on the root causes of this problem, not punish people who use these medications responsibly.
