Summit Lake PG LNG, a new player in the liquefied natural gas export market, is exploring an unconventional method for transporting LNG from the B.C. Interior to the West Coast. By supercooling natural gas into liquid form near Prince George and utilizing specialized shipping containers to transport it by rail to the Port of Prince Rupert, the company hopes to streamline the transportation process without relying on extensive pipeline infrastructure.
The proposed location for Summit Lake's facility is the Hart North industrial site, strategically positioned about 30 kilometers north of Prince George. To facilitate the transportation of LNG, the company plans to utilize the CN Rail line that extends from the B.C. Interior to the Fairview container terminal in Prince Rupert. By supercooling the natural gas and storing it in tanks before loading it onto ISO shipping containers, Summit Lake aims to optimize the efficiency of its export operations.
In addition to its innovative transportation approach, Summit Lake PG LNG has engaged in early consultations with Indigenous groups in the region, such as the Lheidli T’enneh, McLeod Lake Indian Band, and others. These engagements aim to address concerns and gather feedback from the Indigenous communities regarding the potential environmental impacts of the project. The company has also enlisted the expertise of engineering consulting firm Keywest Projects Ltd. to assist with the environmental assessment process.
Summit Lake's strategy diverges from traditional LNG export projects in British Columbia, such as the ongoing construction of the Shell PLC-led LNG Canada terminal in Kitimat. While LNG Canada plans to export 14 million tonnes of LNG annually, Summit Lake aims to achieve a capacity of 2.7 million tonnes per year, positioning itself as a significant player in the evolving LNG export landscape of the region.

This is just another attempt to exploit natural resources without regard for the environment. We need to prioritize sustainable energy solutions, not more LNG projects.
