Iran carried out its first-ever direct attack on Israel by launching more than 300 drones and missiles in response to an airstrike in Damascus. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps named the attack "Operation True Promise" and targeted specific locations in Israel. The Israeli military spokesperson reported that Iran sent 170 drones, 30 cruise missiles, and over 120 ballistic missiles towards Israel.
Despite Israel intercepting a large portion of the incoming drones and missiles, some ballistic missiles managed to reach Israel, causing minor damage to the Nevatim airbase in the Negev desert. The noisy engines of the drones indicated they were likely slow-flying Shahed-136s, taking several hours to travel from Iran to Israel. Additionally, other projectiles were fired from Iraqi, Syrian, and Yemeni territory, with Lebanon's Hezbollah movement also launching rockets towards Israeli positions.
The international community expressed concern over the escalation, with countries like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Qatar urging restraint. President Joe Biden stated the US had assisted in taking down most of the drones and missiles, while the UK's Rishi Sunak mentioned RAF fighter jets intercepting Iranian attack drones. Iran declared its operation had achieved its goals, warning of a larger attack on Israel if it retaliated and threatening to target US bases if Washington supported any Israeli military action against Iran. Israeli officials vowed to hold Iran accountable for the attack and mentioned the possibility of forming a strategic alliance against the perceived threat from Iran.
