A century after the birth of Hachiko, a renowned Japanese Akita Inu, a rare photograph has surfaced, capturing the dog in his twilight years. The image, provided by a Tokyo resident, depicts Hachiko with droopy ears, accompanied by the reader's father, Kasaburo Gomi.
Kasaburo worked at Shibuya Station from 1933 to 1935, the year Hachiko passed away. The photograph shows Kasaburo, dressed as a station worker, feeding Hachiko as the dog raises its paw. Hachiko's advanced age is evident in his drooping ears.
Keita Matsui, a curator at the Shibuya Folk and Literary Shirane Memorial Museum, estimates the photo was taken between 1934 and 1935 based on the characteristics of Hachiko's collar. Matsui notes that it is unusual to see Hachiko wearing a collar and displaying his left shoulder in a photograph.
Kenji Gomi, Kasaburo's son, provided the photograph after seeing a picture of Hachiko in The Asahi Shimbun. He expressed his belief that his father would have been delighted to share the photo with the public.
