Thousands of Ukrainian children taken to Russia amid fears of 're-education'

Veronika Vlasenko, who attended school in Russia for 14 months, was repeatedly told by teachers and fellow students that she would never be able to go home to Ukraine. She and nearly 20,000 other children have been moved from Ukraine to Russia over the past two years. There are concerns that if these children are not returned soon, Russia's program to "re-educate" them could be devastatingly effective. Russian officials have used various methods to bring Ukrainian children to Russia, including separating them from their parents and giving them new names. The warrant for the arrest of Vladimir Putin and the Russian children’s commissioner cites Russia's actions as a war crime, stating that they intended to permanently remove children from Ukraine. Ukrainian officials are calling for international pressure to bring the children home, as only a few hundred have managed to return so far.
