Construction has officially started on a temporary facility in Kallang, Singapore, in preparation for the 2025 World Aquatics Championships. According to Mark Chay, co-chairperson of the organizing committee, workers are currently laying the groundwork and foundations for the upcoming venue, which is slated to be ready by the end of May 2024.
The championships, which will take place from July 11 to August 3, 2024, were moved to Singapore after the original location in Russia was deemed unsuitable due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This newly constructed facility is intended to not only host the championships but also to serve as a venue for the Southeast Asia Age Group Swimming Championships in mid-June, providing an opportunity for athletes to experience the event prior to the major competition.
Chay emphasized the importance of the facility for the Southeast Asian community, expressing hope that it will inspire future generations of swimmers. He mentioned the goal of creating a legacy where young athletes can reflect on swimming in a space that has hosted world record-breaking events. The temporary venue will include a competition pool, a warm-up pool, spectator seating for around 4,800 individuals, and designated areas for community-related activities.
