Threats Against Lawmakers and Trump Nominees Condemned
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) condemned a series of threats targeting members of his caucus, just days after similar threats were made against President-elect Trump's Cabinet selections. The threats, which included pipe bombs and "swatting" incidents, were directed at lawmakers from Connecticut and other states.
Jeffries stated that all of the threatening messages were signed "MAGA" and that law enforcement found no explosives at any of the targeted lawmakers' homes. He emphasized that violence against elected officials is unacceptable and that perpetrators must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
President Biden also addressed the threats, stating that his administration is working closely with the FBI to investigate the incidents.
Several lawmakers from Connecticut, including Sen. Christopher Murphy and Reps. Joe Courtney, John Larson, Rosa DeLauro, Jahana Hayes, and James Himes, received bomb threats. Rep. Seth Magaziner from Rhode Island also reported a threat against his home.
Prior to these incidents, threats were made against Trump's U.N. ambassador-designate Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), former Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY), former Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer (R-OR), and former San Diego Chargers cornerback Scott Turner. Trump nominees including Howard Lutnick, Brooke Rollins, and Pete Hegseth also received threats.
The FBI stated that they are aware of the threats and are working with law enforcement partners to investigate. They encourage the public to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.
