Recently, a significant joint effort by Chinese and Cambodian authorities led to the repatriation of 240 Chinese suspects accused of involvement in gambling and fraudulent activities. These individuals were escorted back to Taiyuan in Shanxi province on three charter flights, marking the second wave of repatriations conducted collaboratively by the police forces of both countries.
The Cambodian authorities had recently dismantled a gambling operation in Phnom Penh, arresting numerous suspects from various nations, including over 500 Chinese nationals. The Ministry of Public Security in China has indicated that the process of repatriating the remaining suspects will occur in subsequent batches, with local law enforcement assigned to oversee their safe return and investigate their involvement in criminal activities.
Earlier this year, in April, a similar operation saw more than 680 Chinese suspects sent back to China, showcasing a pattern of collaboration that is strengthening over time. During a global security forum held in September, China and Cambodia formalized their commitment to jointly addressing gambling and fraud-related crimes.
This repatriation comes shortly after another instance in which over 760 Chinese suspects were returned from Myanmar, where they were allegedly involved in telecommunications and internet fraud. The Chinese police have been intensified efforts in recent years to combat cross-border gambling and online fraud, working to dismantle international criminal networks and apprehend offenders.
Furthermore, Chinese authorities have emphasized the importance of ongoing cooperation with other countries and regions to enhance law enforcement activities. To protect citizens, they have also urged the public to steer clear of overseas gambling and to remain cautious regarding emerging fraud schemes.
