A Champion of Desert Control in China
Tang Ximing, a senior engineer at the State-owned forest farm in Zhongwei, Ningxia Hui autonomous region, has dedicated his life to combating desertification. For 34 years, he has developed innovative technologies and models that are widely applied under the Three-North Shelterbelt Program, a national initiative launched in 1978 to combat desertification across 13 provinces in Northwest, North, and Northeast China.
Zhongwei, situated at the edge of the Tengger Desert, China's fourth-largest, plays a crucial role in preventing desertification. Tang's childhood was deeply impacted by the harsh desert environment, witnessing the death of a friend in a sandstorm at the age of 7. This experience fueled his determination to transform his hometown and protect future generations.
Tang's passion for desert control led him to pursue a forestry program at Northwest Forestry College, now part of Northwest A&F University. In 1991, he began his lifelong work at the Zhongwei county forestry institute. Over time, his hatred for the desert transformed into a deep love and commitment to its restoration.
Tang's dedication is evident in his tireless efforts. He spends an average of 10 hours daily in the desert, covering 20,000 steps and meticulously measuring every section of the desert control project. His inventions, such as the iron pestle for planting saplings deep underground, have revolutionized desert control and tree planting. This innovative tool, patented in 2017, has become a standard in Northwest China due to its low cost, convenience, and effectiveness.
Tang's commitment to quality is reflected in the high standards of his projects. A letter from the World Bank commends the "satisfactory outcome" of the Ningxia Desertification Control and Ecological Protection Project, highlighting its value as a model for future projects in other countries.
Through his efforts, 90% of desertified land on the southeastern edge of the Tengger Desert has been transformed into green land, with plant coverage increasing from less than 1% to 42%. Tang has also trained and led a team of 300 farmers, significantly improving their income and livelihoods.
Tang's vision extends beyond simply controlling the desert. He believes in managing it sustainably while ensuring a fulfilling life for the people who live there. His ultimate goal is to achieve harmony between humans and the desert, making it a valuable resource for future generations.
Tang's dedication and innovative spirit have made him a true champion of desert control in China. His story serves as an inspiration for all who strive to protect our environment and build a sustainable future.
