Peter Bakker's Vision for Green Development at the 2nd China International Supply Chain Expo
Peter Bakker, President and CEO of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), expressed his high hopes for the 2nd China International Supply Chain Expo (CISCE) to contribute significantly to green development. He highlighted China's leadership in developing new green technologies, particularly in clean energy, mobility, battery, and hydrogen technologies, which he believes are crucial for decarbonizing economies and industrial processes.
Bakker emphasized China's substantial investments in renewable energy, surpassing any other country for seven consecutive years. This, coupled with the rapidly growing clean energy infrastructure, will facilitate the decarbonization of heavy industries like steel and aluminum, ultimately leading to a global supply of green steel. He believes this will not only benefit China but also contribute to greening supply chains worldwide.
Recognizing the need for a universally applied carbon accounting system, Bakker commended China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment for its efforts in developing carbon accounting rules. He stressed the importance of aligning global carbon accounting systems to ensure transparency and comparability of carbon content across supply chains. He expressed confidence that Chinese innovation in this area will drive global decarbonization efforts.
Bakker also underlined the significance of the circular economy in achieving decarbonization goals. He estimates that 40-45% of decarbonization efforts must come from a circular economy, emphasizing the critical role of material reuse within supply chains. He envisions new solutions for collecting and reusing materials, creating significant job and supply chain management opportunities.
Overall, Bakker's vision for green development emphasizes China's leadership in green technology, clean energy investment, and the development of a robust circular economy. He believes these efforts will not only benefit China but also contribute to a more sustainable future for the entire world.
