Flop, a Humboldt penguin born in April, faced a difficult start to life. After losing her mother and being abandoned by her father, she developed a limp that quickly worsened, leaving her unable to stand or support her own weight.
a penguin-sized baby bouncer.
This innovative device allowed Flop to remain upright during feeding times, alleviating the pressure on her internal organs caused by her inability to stand. Additionally, they constructed a special treadmill and adapted a baby walker to encourage her to use her legs.
With time and patience, Flop began to show signs of improvement. She started using her feet to push herself up, lifting her head, and eventually taking her first wobbly steps. The zookeepers also received guidance from Toronto Zoo, where a similar case had been successfully treated.
Through a combination of the baby bouncer, adapted equipment, and physiotherapy exercises, Flop gradually regained her strength and mobility. She will now be slowly reintroduced to the main penguin colony.
Despite her challenges, Flop's determination and the unwavering dedication of the Dudley Zoo staff have allowed her to overcome adversity and find her waddle. Although she may always be smaller than her fellow penguins, her spirit and resilience are an inspiration.
