Claudia Sheinbaum, who serves as the President of Mexico, spoke to the press after what she described as a cordial phone conversation with Donald Trump. During this discussion, which revolved around issues of immigration and the smuggling of fentanyl, Sheinbaum expressed that there would be no impending tariff wars between the United States and Mexico. This assurance came in light of Trump’s earlier comments threatening to impose a 25% tariff on Mexico and additional tariffs on Canada and China in response to illegal immigration and drug trafficking into the U.S.
In her address, Sheinbaum was quick to clarify that she did not consent to the closure of borders, as suggested by Trump in a social media post. She remarked that each individual has their own style of communication but emphasized that closing borders was never an option for her government. While the matter of tariffs was not touched upon during their conversation, Sheinbaum indicated her belief that there would be no need for retaliatory tariffs.
She further explained that Trump acknowledged the initiatives her administration is implementing to tackle migration issues, including support for Central American countries. Sheinbaum noted that due to these measures, potential immigrants would not reach the northern border of Mexico. Additionally, the Mexican president pointed out that Trump showed interest in programs aimed at combating fentanyl addiction in Mexico while she also raised concerns about the influx of American-made weapons into the country which fuel drug cartel violence.
Sheinbaum addressed queries regarding military intervention by the U.S. against drug trafficking in Mexico, dismissing them as highly unrealistic. Stressing the importance of her communications with Trump and his team, she reaffirmed her commitment to Mexico's sovereignty, stating that Mexico is an independent nation that prioritizes its autonomy above all else.
