In an interview with ANI, Ambassador Reuven Azar discussed Israel's response following the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which led to the deaths of over 1,200 individuals and the hostage-taking of 250 people, including diverse nationalities. In retaliation, Israel has launched a substantial military operation aimed at dismantling Hamas, claiming to have dealt significant blows to the organization and neutralized the missile threat from Gaza.
Azar emphasized that Israel's operations are not solely focused on military objectives but also involve ensuring that humanitarian aid reaches Palestinians. While Israel maintains pressure on Hamas to prevent its rearmament, it is also committed to facilitating support for the Palestinian population who are in dire need. Additionally, he pointed out that Hamas has been misappropriating humanitarian assistance by charging money for aid, inhibiting direct support for those in need.
He further acknowledged the United States' role in negotiating a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, appreciating the financial support from the US to prepare Israel for future conflicts, particularly regarding threats from Iran. Azar noted that the ceasefire aims to curb hostilities and foster safety for residents on both sides of the tense border, thus promoting a dialogue that could lead to stability in the region.
