Assam Chief Minister Highlights Progress and Potential of Northeast Tourism
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma delivered a speech at the 12th edition of the International Tourism Mart (ITM) in Kaziranga, highlighting the significant progress made in the Northeast region and its potential for tourism development.
Sarma emphasized the transformation witnessed in the region since 2014, with peace accords leading to increased stability and paving the way for tourism growth. He proposed the establishment of tourism museums in New Delhi and Guwahati to promote the Northeast as a distinct tourist destination.
The Chief Minister also acknowledged the recent recognition of Charaideo Maidam as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, highlighting its historical significance and the contributions of the Ahom dynasty. He called for collaboration among stakeholders and entrepreneurs to develop the tourism sector sustainably.
Sarma emphasized the role of tourism in cultural exchange, environmental conservation, and economic growth, particularly in developing economies. He highlighted Assam's diverse attractions, including tea gardens, the Brahmaputra River, festivals, historical landmarks, and spiritual sites.
He noted the significant increase in tourist arrivals in Assam, attributing it to the Prime Minister's visit and the successful conservation efforts in Kaziranga National Park. He appealed for the inclusion of Majuli in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list and expressed gratitude for the support received in developing tourism infrastructure.
The event was attended by dignitaries from across the Northeast, including Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Tourism Ministers from the eight Northeast states, Assam's Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament, entrepreneurs, and other dignitaries.
