Acharya Satyendra Das, the Chief Priest of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple, recently expressed his disapproval of a petition that seeks to prohibit the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) from operating in Bangladesh. He believes these types of petitions are part of a conspiracy designed to undermine the Hindu community and stated that without the involvement of the Indian government, the situation for Hindus in Bangladesh could significantly worsen.
In his remarks, he highlighted the intentions behind these measures, asserting that they aim to oppress Hindus and organizations that represent them. Emphasizing the peaceful nature of ISKCON, which he described as composed of principled individuals, he called on the government to consider these community threats seriously to prevent further suffering among Hindus in the region.
The petition's supporters have labeled ISKCON a "radical organization," alleging that it engages in activities provoking communal unrest. In response, leaders of the Hindu community, including Mrityunjay Kumar Roy of the Bangladesh National Hindu Grand Alliance, have vehemently defended ISKCON, describing it as a benevolent organization dedicated to the service of the underprivileged rather than a source of conflict.
This issue has intensified amidst the unrest following the detention of Chinmoy Krishna Das, a former ISKCON priest, who was arrested on sedition charges, stirring protests in Bangladesh. Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar condemned both the arrest and the increasing violence against minorities, calling for his immediate release. He and others have voiced concerns about a recent upsurge in attacks on Hindu temples and communities since the political changes within Bangladesh.
Furthermore, ISKCON Bangladesh has released a statement disapproving of Chinmoy Krishna Das's detention and urged the government to foster harmony among the diverse religious groups within the country. They have also articulated their demands regarding the protection of the Sanatani community amidst rising violence and illustrate the urgent need for dialogue and peaceful coexistence in the nation.
