Golf has been a significant part of the author's life since childhood, influenced by her father's involvement in the sport. Growing up, instead of enjoying typical family vacations, her family spent time playing at a nine-hole course, allowing her to develop her skills extensively, even captaining her high school golf team.
However, as she matured and began teaching her husband how to golf, she noticed a shift in dynamics. Often paired with strangers, particularly men, they assumed her husband was the more knowledgeable player until they witnessed her abilities. One incident that particularly stood out was when a male player suggested she play from the women's tees, a remark she handled with a solid drive down the fairway, yet it highlighted the underlying biases she encountered.
Throughout her golfing journey, she had previously felt a sense of belonging, even when occasionally facing skepticism due to her gender. Yet, as she transitioned to playing as part of a couple, she began to feel overshadowed, reduced to her role as a "wife" in the sport. Interactions with male players often include unsolicited advice that, while intended to be kind, comes off as patronizing, contributing to her self-doubt and discomfort.
Although some men she encounters on the course are respectful and supportive, she believes the environment of golf remains predominantly male-oriented, making it uncomfortable for women like herself. Nevertheless, she finds hope for the future, noting a rise in female golfers and increased viewership for women's golf, indicating a potential shift in how female players are perceived and treated on the course. She remains optimistic that future generations of women in golf might experience a more inclusive and respectful environment than she did.
