According to a report from The New York Times, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, recently met with President-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. The details of their conversation remain unclear, and neither Meta nor Trump's representatives have provided comments on the meeting, which took place on a Wednesday. Notably, Zuckerberg had chosen not to endorse a candidate for the upcoming 2024 presidential election, and his relationship with Trump has often been fraught with tension.
This rocky relationship includes Trump's earlier statements suggesting he would seek to jail Zuckerberg if he ascended to the presidency. Nevertheless, Zuckerberg expressed a certain respect for Trump’s courageous response after an assassination attempt earlier in the year, calling it one of the most impressive things he had ever witnessed. Following Trump's election victory in 2016, Zuckerberg publicly congratulated him and expressed optimism for the country's future, indicating a willingness to collaborate with the new administration.
Historically, Zuckerberg has met with Trump multiple times, including during an unannounced White House meeting and a private dinner with billionaire Peter Thiel in late 2019. In a retrospective comment, Trump mentioned his regret over not banning Facebook while in office, although he acknowledged Zuckerberg's overtures and invitations to the White House. Notably, Facebook had suspended Trump's account following the January 6 Capitol riots, but Meta reinstated it in 2023. Zuckerberg is not alone, as other tech leaders, such as Elon Musk, have also been seen engaging with Trump post-election at Mar-a-Lago.
