Chidimma Adetshina has made remarkable strides in the pageant world by becoming the first runner-up in the Miss Universe competition, marking Nigeria’s best placement in the event's lengthy history of 73 years. Before this achievement, she participated in Miss South Africa but faced severe online harassment regarding her identity, which prompted her to withdraw from that competition.
Adetshina, who was born in Soweto, South Africa, has Nigerian roots through her father. The controversy surrounding her participation in Miss South Africa started when critics targeted her Nigerian name, claiming she wasn't authentically South African. This situation led to a wave of xenophobic comments on social media platforms, compounding her mental health struggles as she tried to navigate her pageant journey amid the hostility.
In August, the South African Department of Home Affairs launched an investigation into Adetshina’s citizenship status based on an allegation concerning her mother’s identity. The department concluded that despite the probe, such allegations should not affect Adetshina since she was just a child at the time. Ultimately, the department decided to revoke both Adetshina's and her mother's South African documents, which prompted her to consider relocating to Nigeria to escape the toxic environment she faced in South Africa. She expressed disappointment over the lack of acceptance due to her Nigerian background.
After stepping back from Miss South Africa for personal safety, Adetshina seized the opportunity to compete for the Miss Nigeria title, winning it shortly thereafter. Her journey to the Miss Universe stage was filled with challenges, yet she persevered, finding joy in small moments during the competition despite the overarching stress she experienced.
Adetshina’s accomplishment not only symbolizes personal success but also represents a pivotal moment for Nigeria in the realm of beauty pageants. As she stood on stage alongside Miss Denmark awaiting the winner’s announcement, she felt an overwhelming sense of pride in her achievements and in representing her country. Reflecting on her experiences, she realized the importance of believing in herself, emphasizing that her future is shaped by her own choices rather than by the negativity of others.
