Ceasefire Hopes Amidst Ongoing Conflict
The United Nations Security Council and senior officials have intensified their calls for a ceasefire in the Middle East, with reports suggesting a potential agreement in Lebanon. This follows the International Criminal Court's arrest warrants for Israeli and Hamas leaders, and the US veto of a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
In Lebanon, Deputy Parliament Speaker Elias Bou Saab expressed optimism about the Washington-proposed ceasefire with Israel, stating that "no serious obstacles" remained unless Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu changed his mind. The proposal reportedly involves an Israeli military withdrawal from southern Lebanon and the deployment of Lebanese troops within 60 days.
However, the situation in Gaza remains grim, with little hope for a ceasefire. UN officials warn of an imminent risk of losing the frameworks established in 1967 and 1973, jeopardizing the two-state solution and potentially causing widespread instability.
UN Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Muhannad Hadi stressed the urgency of a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and the safe delivery of lifesaving support. He also highlighted the plight of 1.6 million people living in makeshift shelters across Gaza, facing severe restrictions on aid delivery.
At the G7 Foreign Ministers' Meeting, Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud also urged for an immediate ceasefire, unrestricted humanitarian aid, and progress on the two-state solution.
Despite growing optimism, Israel continues its campaign in Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah's military capabilities. Israeli jets struck buildings in Beirut's southern suburbs and the southern city of Tyre, killing a local Hezbollah commander.
Experts warn that Israel's approach to the ceasefire negotiations exposes its complex predicament. They urge responsible global powers to critically examine Israel's strategies and prioritize genuine regional stability that serves broader geopolitical interests.
