Vissel Kobe's Victory Marred by Defensive Errors
Vissel Kobe secured a 3-2 victory over Australia's Central Coast Mariners in the Asian Champions League Elite league stage, but the match was far from a clean performance. Defensive blunders and unfortunate mistakes marked the encounter, highlighting the need for improvement in Vissel's backline.
Despite the errors, Vissel managed to maintain their position at the top of the ACLE's East League with 13 points from four games. The first half saw Koya Yuruki's free kick deflect off two teammates before Ryuho Kikuchi steered the ball past Mariners keeper Dylan Peraic-Cullen.
Five minutes into the second half, Vissel doubled their lead through an own goal. Defender Storm Roux attempted to head away Rikuto Hirose's long diagonal ball but inadvertently sent it past Peraic-Cullen.
However, Vissel's defensive woes continued as they gifted the Mariners a goal in the 54th minute. Captain Hotaru Yamaguchi's attempted clearance ended up in his own net, bringing the score to 2-1.
The Mariners equalized in the 74th minute through substitute Bailey Brandtman. His powerful strike was deflected off Kikuchi's boot and past Vissel keeper Shota Arai.
The winning goal came in the 81st minute. Mariners defender Paull's movement to direct his teammates created an opening for Vissel's Daiju Sasaki, who capitalized on the opportunity with a shot that slipped through Peraic-Cullen's hands.
While Vissel emerged victorious, the defensive lapses exposed vulnerabilities that need to be addressed if they aim for continued success in the Asian Champions League.
