Tom Homan, who has been chosen by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as the "border czar," made a trip to the U.S.-Mexico border on Tuesday with Texas Governor Greg Abbott. During this visit, he criticized the Biden administration's handling of the immigration crisis, asserting that there will indeed be mass deportations planned under Trump's future leadership due to the current surge in illegal immigration. He stated that the incoming administration is already in preparation for these measures and does not intend to delay their implementation until Inauguration Day in January.
While in Texas, Homan and Abbott participated in a Thanksgiving event where they served meals to soldiers and law enforcement officers active at Eagle Pass and Edinburg as part of Operation Lone Star. This operation was initiated by Abbott in March 2021, in response to perceived failures by the Biden administration to manage immigration along the Texas-Mexico border. Although Abbott claims the operation has been successful, there has been criticism raised concerning the well-being of the troops involved, as well as legal challenges from the Biden administration and civil rights groups regarding Texas's authority to enforce immigration laws.
Homan expressed his commitment to collaborating with Abbott to further their shared goals once Trump assumes office. Abbott argues that Operation Lone Star is aligned with U.S. federal immigration laws, while Homan, who previously directed Immigration and Customs Enforcement under Trump, has outlined methods for executing deportations that include targeted arrests rather than indiscriminate sweeps. Despite these plans, data suggests that illegal crossings at the border may be decreasing, potentially hitting a low point for the Biden administration.
