Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City, appeared in court on Tuesday regarding his financial situation in the defamation lawsuit stemming from the Georgia election. During the proceedings, he unexpectedly announced that he is financially broke. He currently owes $148 million to Ruby Freeman and Wandrea Moss, the plaintiffs in the case who successfully sued him for defamation due to false allegations made in connection with the 2020 presidential election.
The judge noted that Giuliani has not complied with previous orders to surrender assets, which include a 1980 Mercedes and money from a Citibank account. Giuliani also dismissed his previous legal representation during the hearing, with his new attorney asserting that 90% of the required assets had already been transferred. A request to postpone the trial was rejected by the court.
During his remarks, Giuliani expressed his financial distress, saying, “I have no cash. It's all tied up.” He noted his inability to afford even basic services and lamented that he has no access to a credit card or checking account. The judge cautioned Giuliani about making any statements in court unless he was under oath and reiterated the necessity of adhering to court directives.
