G7 Calls for Ceasefire in Israel-Hezbollah Conflict
Foreign ministers from the G7 nations have called for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, but avoided taking a stance on enforcing an international arrest warrant for Israel's leader.
The ministers demanded that Israel "facilitate full, rapid, safe and unhindered humanitarian assistance" to Palestinians in Gaza, warning of unprecedented food insecurity.
They did not mention the ICC warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant, which allege war crimes. Italy, a G7 member, had placed the warrants on the agenda, but the U.S. called them "outrageous."
The G7 statement reaffirmed its commitment to international humanitarian law and urged Israel to uphold its obligations.
Ministers were encouraged by indications of a possible ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, which could also improve prospects for a ceasefire in Gaza.
The G7 meeting also addressed the war in Ukraine, condemning Russia's use of North Korean troops and its "irresponsible and threatening nuclear rhetoric." The group vowed its continued support for Ukraine's territorial integrity and independence.
