Daniel Andreas San Diego, a major fugitive on the FBI's wanted list, was apprehended in a rural region of northern Wales after evading law enforcement for more than 20 years. The National Crime Agency reported his arrest on Monday, and during a court appearance at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, he was ordered to remain in custody while awaiting extradition to the United States.
San Diego, now 46 years old, is charged in connection with two bomb explosions that occurred on the morning of August 28, 2003, at a biotechnology firm in Emeryville, California. He is also accused of a subsequent bombing at a nutritional products company in Pleasanton, California, which occurred a month after the initial attacks. While there were no injuries from the bombings, authorities indicated that the device detonated at the biotechnology company was intended to injure first responders.
The attacks were claimed by a group called Revolutionary Cells-Animal Liberation Brigade, which took responsibility due to the companies’ connections with Huntingdon Life Sciences, a company under scrutiny by animal rights activists for its role in testing experimental drugs on animals. FBI Director Christopher Wray emphasized the agency's commitment to capturing fugitives like San Diego, stressing that violence is not an appropriate way to convey beliefs within the nation.
In 2009, San Diego was notably recognized as the first suspect of domestic terrorism to be placed on the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorist List, with a $250,000 reward offered for information leading to his capture. He was widely publicized, with posters displayed across the country, including high-traffic locations like Times Square, and he was featured on the show “America’s Most Wanted” multiple times.
San Diego's background includes growing up in a well-off suburb of Marin County, where his father served as city manager for an affluent area. Described by the FBI as a capable individual with expertise in computer networks and sailing, San Diego reportedly carried a handgun. The FBI initially surveilled him in October 2003, right before he discreetly left his car and eluded capture by disappearing into San Francisco’s transit system.
Despite various sightings reported globally, law enforcement efforts continued until San Diego was located at a property close to woodlands in Wales, approximately 8,000 kilometers away from his previous hideout in San Francisco. Further specifics regarding his arrest have not been disclosed.
