China's Firm Stance on Taiwan and Regional Stability
China has expressed strong opposition to certain countries using the Taiwan issue as a pretext to bolster regional military deployments and incite confrontations, jeopardizing regional peace and stability. This statement comes in response to reports that the United States is formulating contingency plans for military deployments in Japan and the Philippines in the event of a Taiwan-related emergency.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning underscored the critical role of adhering to the one-China principle in maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. She rejected attempts by relevant countries to exploit the Taiwan issue to escalate tensions.
Mao also commended Russia's unwavering support for China's position on the Taiwan issue. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko reiterated Moscow's backing, stating that the United States has violated the one-China principle and intensified military-political ties with Taiwan. Rudenko accused Washington of "generating a crisis in Asia to suit its own selfish interests."
Mao emphasized that the one-China principle is a widely accepted international norm and expressed appreciation for Russia's adherence to it.
In a separate development, Mao urged Lithuania to return to the path of upholding the one-China principle to pave the way for normalizing bilateral relations. This follows the statement by Lithuania's incoming prime minister, Gintautas Paluckas, indicating his government's intention to mend ties with China.
Beijing downgraded diplomatic relations with Vilnius to the level of charge d'affaires after the Baltic state permitted the establishment of a "Taiwanese Representative Office" on its soil in 2021.
Mao reiterated that Lithuania's erroneous actions on the Taiwan issue are the root cause of the difficulties in China-Lithuania relations. She emphasized that China remains open to dialogue while urging Lithuania to honor the political commitments outlined in the joint communique establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries.
