Jameson Williams, wide receiver for the Detroit Lions, will not face criminal charges after a recent traffic stop where a registered gun was discovered in the car he was riding in. The incident occurred during the early hours of October 8 when Detroit police pulled over the vehicle driven by his brother for speeding.
During the stop, Williams indicated that one of the two firearms in the car was his and legally registered. However, he did not possess a concealed-pistol license, which is required for a Michigan gun owner to carry a firearm in a vehicle unless it is stored in a closed case. In this incident, his brother was the only one with a concealed-carry permit.
Kym Worthy, the prosecutor, highlighted the unclear nature of Michigan's gun laws in cases like this, stating, “We really could not recall any case that had facts that mirrored this case.” She also pointed out that the driver, who held the concealed-carry permit, was in control of the vehicle during the stop. This situation raised questions about how many firearms a valid permit holder is allowed to manage.
It was noted that Williams received his own concealed-carry license on November 6, about a month after the incident. His attorney expressed gratitude for the work done by the prosecutor's office, emphasizing that Williams felt thankful and humbled by the resolution. Following the traffic stop, Williams was temporarily detained and placed in a patrol car, but he was later released without being taken to detention, and his firearm was not confiscated. As for his performance on the field, Williams has recorded 29 catches for 602 yards and scored four touchdowns this season, following his first-round draft pick in 2022.
