On October 18, 2024, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with David Lammy, the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the United Kingdom, in Beijing. During these talks, Wang highlighted the crucial roles both China and the UK play as permanent members of the UN Security Council and major global economies, underscoring their responsibility to uphold a UN-centered international order.
Wang expressed China's readiness to collaborate with the UK, aiming to adhere to the agreements made by the leaders of both countries. He advocated for open cooperation, emphasizing mutual understanding and respect while focusing on enhancing strategic communication and practical cooperation to advance the relationship to a new phase of stable growth. He also recognized the British Labour government's proposal for a long-term and significant partnership with China as a positive reflection of historical trends and current needs.
Addressing sensitive topics, Wang reiterated that Taiwan and Hong Kong issues are domestic matters for China, asserting that non-interference in internal affairs is a foundational principle of international relations. He urged both countries to respect each other's concerns, promote dialogue based on equality, and foster a conducive environment for cooperation.
Wang further committed to revitalizing various dialogue and cooperation mechanisms with the UK, suggesting collaborative efforts in trade, finance, environmental initiatives, technology, healthcare, education, and cultural exchanges. He expressed China's eagerness to work with all countries, including the UK, to promote multilateralism and advance international equity and justice.
In response, Lammy affirmed the UK's dedication to deepening dialogue and cooperation with China while managing differences respectfully to benefit both nations in the long run. He reiterated the UK's sustained commitment regarding the Taiwan issue and expressed hope for extensive collaboration on climate change, energy, environmental stewardship, and economic partnerships, marking the beginning of a new phase of the UK-China partnership. He emphasized that as permanent members of the UN Security Council, both nations should work together to maintain free trade and address global challenges through diplomatic efforts.

This meeting feels like a step backwards. The UK should be standing up to China, not cooperating with their expansionist agenda.

It's rich for China to talk about "international equity and justice" when they're actively engaged in territorial disputes in the South China Sea.
