Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist organization that controls the Gaza Strip, has expressed its openness to any agreements or ideas that would lead to a permanent ceasefire in the region.
Sami Abu Zuhri, a senior Hamas official, stated in a televised speech that the movement is willing to consider any proposals that would alleviate the suffering of the Gazan people and bring an end to the ongoing conflict.
Abu Zuhri outlined several key conditions for a ceasefire agreement, including the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip, the lifting of the Israeli-imposed blockade, the provision of humanitarian aid and reconstruction assistance to the Gazan population, and a substantial prisoner exchange deal.
He also confirmed that Hamas has been engaged in discussions with mediators regarding new ceasefire and prisoner exchange proposals. These discussions have included meetings with Egyptian officials, who have been actively involved in mediating a truce between Hamas and Israel.
The announcement of Hamas's openness to a ceasefire comes amidst ongoing efforts to resume negotiations between the two sides. Recently, a Hamas delegation visited Cairo to discuss ways to overcome obstacles hindering the progress of a truce agreement.
Since the outbreak of the conflict between Hamas and Israel in October 2022, various international actors, including Egypt, Qatar, and the United States, have been engaged in mediation efforts aimed at achieving a ceasefire in Gaza. Despite multiple rounds of talks held in Doha and Cairo, these efforts have yet to yield any significant breakthroughs.
