Hundreds of fans in Oshu City, Japan, gathered at a public viewing center early Tuesday morning to watch their hometown hero, Shohei Ohtani, and the Los Angeles Dodgers take on the New York Yankees in Game 3 of the World Series.
The atmosphere was electric as fans, many clad in Dodger blue, cheered on Ohtani and the team. Despite Ohtani going hitless in the game, the Dodgers emerged victorious with a 4-2 win, putting them just one win away from the championship title.
The excitement was palpable throughout the viewing, with fans erupting in cheers after Freddie Freeman's home run gave the Dodgers a 2-0 lead. "He's more like a Japanese treasure than just a local (treasure)," said fan Hiromitsu Kikuchi. "I think he has passed beyond the hometown and is more like world-class. We have never had a star player like this before from our hometown."
The viewing center was filled with a diverse crowd, including children from Ohtani's former kindergarten who waved flags with his smiling face. Many fans expressed their relief and pride in seeing Ohtani back in action after his dislocated shoulder injury in Game 2. "I came to see Ohtani because the television news reported that he would play," said fan Tadashi Onodera. "It's fantastic. We are proud to have such a player from our hometown."
Oshu City, located about 300 miles north of Tokyo, is a rural area that takes immense pride in their local hero. Ohtani's journey from Little League star to international baseball sensation has captivated the entire nation, and his hometown remains his biggest supporter. As the Dodgers inch closer to the World Series title, the excitement in Oshu City continues to build, with everyone eagerly anticipating the moment their hometown hero lifts the championship trophy.
