Lebanon on the Brink of War, Guterres Warns
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a stark warning on Tuesday, stating that Lebanon is "on the verge of an all-out war." He urged all parties involved to exercise restraint and prevent further escalation.
Guterres highlighted the volatile situation in the Middle East, describing it as a "powder keg with many parties holding the match." He expressed concern over the escalating conflict in the occupied West Bank and the recent attacks in Lebanon, which threaten to destabilize the entire region.
The UN chief detailed the devastating consequences of the ongoing conflict. He reported that Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon have killed over 2,000 people in the past year, including 1,500 in the past two weeks alone. Attacks by Hezbollah and others south of the Blue Line have also claimed the lives of at least 49 people. Additionally, over 1 million people have been displaced within Lebanon, and 300,000 have fled to Syria.
Guterres emphasized the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries. He commended the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for their continued efforts and called on all actors to ensure their safety and security.
The UN chief also addressed the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, which he described as a "nightmare" entering its second year. He condemned the violations of international humanitarian law and reiterated the calls for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages, and the provision of lifesaving aid.
Guterres concluded by urging all parties to work towards a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine. He stressed that immediate action is necessary to prevent further suffering and loss of life.
