In a recent interview, Rustam Minnikhanov, the leader of Russia’s Republic of Tatarstan, expressed confidence that the advanced development of bilateral relations between Russia and China would lead to enhanced collaboration at the regional levels. He underscored the 16th BRICS summit, hosted in Kazan, as a key occasion for Tatarstan to present its unique capabilities and potential contributions toward furthering Russia-China relations.
Minnikhanov highlighted Tatarstan's active role in bolstering these relations through various agreements with multiple provinces in China, alongside establishing sister-city relationships with several Chinese urban centers. He noted that trade statistics for the region were promising, illustrating a significant rise in commerce, with trade turnover doubling to over $3 billion by the last year and about 60% of Tatarstan's imports sourced from China.
He emphasized the importance of these economic connections, particularly as Tatarstan focuses on expanding its trade relations with Eastern nations, especially China. Currently, several collaborative economic initiatives involving Chinese firms are underway, pointing to the region's potential in logistics and transport sectors. Minnikhanov referred to ongoing efforts linked to the Belt and Road Initiative and the Eurasian Economic Union, highlighting work on international transport and logistics corridors.
Recent advancements include the inauguration of the M-12 Moscow-Kazan expressway, integrating it into the Europe-China transport network, and the establishment of direct flights between Kazan and Shanghai in late September. Additionally, Tatarstan is dedicated to promoting exchanges in areas such as culture, education, science, and tourism with China, further reinforcing the ties between the two regions. Minnikhanov expressed optimism about the high-level success of the BRICS summit in Kazan.
