The Indian Air Force and the US Air Force Strengthen Ties
The Indian Air Force (IAF) and the US Air Force (USAF) concluded a successful two-day Executive Steering Group Meeting (ESG) on September 26th, 2024. This meeting, held in New Delhi, India, marked the 25th edition of the IAF-USAF Executive Steering Group, highlighting the close ties and cooperation between the two air forces.
The meeting was led by the Deputy Commander of the Pacific Air Forces, and discussions focused on enhancing cooperation between the two countries. The IAF noted the close ties and cooperation between the two services in a post on its official social media channels.
This meeting follows a series of joint exercises and engagements between the IAF and USAF. In August 2024, Pacific Air Force units participated in Exercise Tarang Shakti at Jodhpur Air Force Station. This multinational exercise, led by the IAF, aimed to foster diverse ties and strengthen cooperation in various capabilities, including counter air, reconnaissance, airlift, air defense, and close air support.
In June 2024, the IAF participated in Exercise Red Flag 2024 at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska. This advanced aerial combat training exercise brought together several international forces, including the Republic of Singapore Air Force, the Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom, the Royal Netherlands Air Force, and the German Luftwaffe. Notably, the IAF's Rafale aircraft joined the exercise for the first time, marking a significant milestone in India's participation in multinational combat training.
The IAF contingent, comprising aircrew, technicians, engineers, and subject matter experts, was supported by IL-78 Air to Air Refuellers and C-17 Globemaster aircraft. Despite challenging weather conditions and sub-zero temperatures, the IAF maintenance crew ensured the serviceability of all aircraft, enabling over 100 sorties during the exercise.
The IAF and USAF continue to strengthen their partnership through regular exercises, meetings, and exchanges. These engagements enhance interoperability, understanding of operational philosophies, and cooperation in a multinational setting. The experience gained from these interactions is invaluable for both air forces and contributes to their overall operational effectiveness.
