A former University of Kentucky staffer, Betsy Packard, sparked outrage on social media after suggesting that Hurricane Helene was divine punishment for supporters of former President Trump.
Packard, who claimed to be a writer of feminist revisionist poetry, took to social media to ask if God was unleashing death and destruction on red states because of their support for Trump.
"Hurricane Helene…what if GOD is punishing MAGA populations for their hate and hypocrisy? Works for me!" Packard wrote in a post.
Her remarks drew swift backlash, with many users criticizing her for politicizing a natural disaster. Packard, however, doubled down on her stance, arguing that Trump supporters deserved the storm's wrath.
"ALll (sic) day long, MAGAs post lies and mockng nastigrams about Democrats. So, I mocked them, I hammered on their hypocrisy," she wrote in response to critics. "Talk about toxic vengeance (sic). "They can dish it out, but they can't take it."
Packard's comments drew the attention of the University of Kentucky, where she had served as a teaching assistant "a number of years ago." The university condemned her remarks, saying they were "abhorrent" and "do not reflect our values as an institution."
"Our thoughts and concerns are with those impacted by these devastating storms," the school said. "As an institution, we have many members of our community directly impacted by them and are working with them to provide support and resources at this time."
Packard eventually appeared to walk back her comments, claiming that she was simply asking a hypothetical question. However, her initial remarks have left many questioning her judgment and character.
