Flu Vaccines Recommended for Vulnerable Groups as Autumn and Winter Approach
With the approaching flu season in autumn and winter, a public health expert from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that vulnerable groups receive influenza vaccines.
Dr. Yu Wenzhou, chief physician at the CDC, emphasized the importance of timely vaccination during a news conference held in Beijing on Sunday. He strongly advises all individuals aged six months and above, especially children, the elderly, and those with chronic diseases, to get vaccinated unless they have contraindications.
Dr. Yu explained that both attenuated live vaccines and inactivated vaccines are available in China. While their manufacturing processes differ, both types are safe and effective. He cited data showing that flu vaccinations can significantly reduce the risk of developing symptoms and requiring hospitalization. Additionally, mass vaccinations among school students can dramatically decrease the risk of infection clusters.
Dr. Yu recommends completing flu vaccinations before the end of October to ensure optimal protection during the peak flu season.
