China Condemns US Arms Sales to Taiwan, Vows to Protect Sovereignty
The Chinese mainland has expressed strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to the United States' recent arms sales to China's Taiwan region. This move, according to the Chinese government, seriously violates the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques, particularly the August 17 Communique of 1982.
Defense Ministry spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang stated that the arms sales undermine regional stability and peace, and send the wrong signals to "Taiwan independence" separatist forces. He emphasized that Taiwan's security depends on the peaceful development of cross-strait relations, and that the US-made weapons are not a "talisman" for the Democratic Progressive Party authorities.
Zhang stressed that the Taiwan question is the first red line that must not be crossed in China-US relations. He urged the US side to honor its commitment not to support "Taiwan independence", stop military collusion, and stop arming the region in any form. He also called on the US to take practical actions to maintain the stable, healthy, and sustainable development of the relationship with China and between the countries' respective militaries.
The People's Liberation Army, Zhang added, will take decisive and forceful measures to resolutely frustrate any separatist attempts and interference by external forces. China's unwavering commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity remains steadfast.
This statement underscores the heightened tensions in the Taiwan Strait and the potential for escalation due to external interference. The Chinese government's strong stance against the arms sales reflects its determination to protect its national interests and prevent any attempts to undermine its territorial claims. The situation demands careful monitoring and diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and maintain regional stability.
