A Haven for Migrating Raptors

As autumn paints the landscape with vibrant hues, Snake Island-Laotieshan National Nature Reserve in Dalian, Liaoning province, transforms into a bustling haven for migrating raptors. This globally renowned stopover and gathering point witnesses hundreds of thousands of these majestic birds gracing its skies each year.

Snake Island-Laotieshan plays a pivotal role in the East Asia-Australasia Flyway, a crucial migratory route for birds. The reserve's diverse ecosystem provides a sanctuary for various raptor species throughout the fall season.

In late August, the skies above the reserve come alive with the arrival of sparrowhawks and accipiters. Early September marks the appearance of buzzards, while the period from mid-September to late October witnesses a peak in raptor migration. During this time, falcons and eagles of various species soar through the air, creating a breathtaking spectacle.

On September 23rd, 2023, Laotieshan etched its name in history by recording an unprecedented number of raptors in a single day. Over 11,000 raptors were documented, setting a new record for the Chinese mainland. This remarkable feat underscores the reserve's significance as a vital stopover for these incredible creatures.
