A Comprehensive and Technologically Advanced System
China has established the world's largest, most comprehensive, and technologically advanced environmental monitoring network, according to Dong Baotong, vice-minister of ecology and environment. This network plays a crucial role in protecting the environment and ensuring public health.
The network consists of over 33,000 monitoring stations, with a focus on soil monitoring. It also includes 1,734 stations for air quality and 3,646 for groundwater. The system covers all cities at and above the prefecture-level, key river basins, and sea areas under China's jurisdiction.
In addition to traditional areas like water, air, and soil, the network also monitors ecological quality, biodiversity, greenhouse gases, and new pollutants. This comprehensive approach ensures that China has essentially achieved full coverage in terms of monitoring elements.
Previously, the monitoring system relied heavily on manual facilities. However, automatic monitoring has now become the primary method. Drones, mobile monitoring vehicles, and laser radar are standard fixtures at monitoring stations across the country.
The Ministry of Ecology and Environment is the primary user of seven monitoring satellites, which provide robust scientific support for its work. This advanced technology allows for real-time monitoring and data analysis, enabling the ministry to take swift action to address environmental issues.
