Pakistan Sells JF-17 Thunder Jets to Azerbaijan
Pakistan has agreed to sell JF-17 Thunder fighter jets to Azerbaijan, bolstering the air power capabilities of the South Caucasus nation. The deal marks a deepening of defense cooperation between the two countries, which have grown increasingly close in recent years.
The JF-17 Thunder, also known as the FC-1 Xiaolong in Chinese service, is a single-engine jet fighter co-produced by the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex and the Chengdu Aircraft Industry Corporation of China. The aircraft is capable of undertaking a wide range of combat missions and offers contemporary airpower employment options.
The sale of the JF-17s comes amid heightened tensions in the South Caucasus region. In 2023, clashes erupted between Azerbaijan and Armenia, resuming decades-old hostilities. Pakistan, a close ally of Turkey which backed Azerbaijan in the conflict, has been actively engaged in strengthening its defense ties with Azerbaijan.
The agreement to sell the JF-17s was reached during a state visit by Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev to Pakistan in July. The two countries also agreed to enhance cooperation in other areas, including defense. Following the visit, Pakistan deployed an air force contingent to Baku to participate in the Azerbaijan defense exhibition and showcase the aircraft.
The cost and quantity of the jets sold to Azerbaijan were not disclosed. However, the deal is seen as a significant step in bolstering Azerbaijan's air power capabilities and deepening its defense cooperation with Pakistan.
