Over the last three days, North Sikkim has received significant rainfall, leading to the unexpected arrival of snowfall in areas like Thangu, located at 3900 metres, and Gurudongmar Lake, which stands at 5425 metres within the tundra region. This snowfall has come well ahead of the traditional winter onset and has also been noted in the higher elevations of both Lachen and Lachung Valley.
In response to the sudden weather transition, socio-economic activities have been disrupted, presenting difficulties for road users navigating the area. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has responded by deploying heavy machinery and personnel to clear vital routes in North Sikkim, ensuring that connectivity is maintained amidst these challenges.
The state has endured approximately 254.6 mm of rainfall over the past four days, leading to widespread landslides and an increase in Teesta River's water levels, which consequently disrupted National Highway 10 at various points. Fortunately, by Sunday, the weather improved, characterized by a lack of rainfall in Gangtok and several low-lying areas. For the upcoming five days, isolated showers are expected, while temperatures in Gangtok and Tadong have risen to 22 and 28 degrees Celsius, respectively.
