East-West Line Recovery Progressing, Full Service Expected Monday
Recovery works on the East-West Line are progressing well, with the aim of restoring full service by Monday. This follows the days-long disruption caused by a faulty train that damaged tracks and equipment.
As of Saturday, three track point machines and associated equipment have been successfully recovered and tested. Power rails have also been replaced, and restoration work is complete.
Comprehensive system functional and safety tests will be conducted on Sunday, including checks on the tracks, power supply, and train signaling. Test runs will also be conducted at different speeds to ensure smooth operation.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and SMRT have deployed over 300 engineers and technicians to repair the damage. Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat has confirmed that full service is expected to resume on Monday.
The disruption began on Wednesday when a faulty train returning to Ulu Pandan depot caused extensive damage to the track and equipment between Clementi and Dover stations. Engineers identified 34 rail breaks, damage to three track point machines, the third rail, power cables, and rail clips.
Initial plans to partially reinstate services between Jurong East and Buona Vista stations were shelved on Thursday night. Authorities had hoped to run a single-line train shuttle service between the two stations at 20-minute intervals.
Passengers are advised to check SMRT's website and social media channels for the latest updates on the service resumption.
