Death Toll Rises to 66, Rescue Efforts Ongoing
Heavy rainfall since Friday, September 27th, has caused widespread flooding and landslides in Nepal, resulting in the tragic loss of 66 lives. The death toll is expected to rise, with 69 people still missing and 60 injured.
The Kathmandu Valley, home to the capital city and four million residents, has been severely affected. Flooding has brought traffic and normal activity to a standstill, with rescue workers using helicopters and rubber boats to reach people stranded on rooftops and elevated ground. Some areas have received over 322mm of rain in the past day.
The incessant downpours are attributed to a low-pressure system over parts of neighboring India, causing a delay in the retreat of the South Asian monsoon. Most rivers in Nepal have swollen, overflowing roads and bridges. Landslides have blocked highways in 28 places, and authorities are working to clear debris and reopen roads.
While international flights are operating, domestic flights have been disrupted. The Koshi River, known for causing deadly floods in neighboring Bihar, India, is currently above the danger level.
The earliest respite from the heavy rains is expected on Sunday, September 29th. Until then, rescue efforts continue, and the nation mourns the lives lost in this devastating natural disaster.
