LaLiga has issued a strong statement demanding the urgent apprehension of fans who have launched a hate campaign targeting Vinicius Jr, the Brazilian winger for Real Madrid, in anticipation of the derby match against Atletico Madrid. This campaign has taken form on social media under the hashtag "#MetropolitanoConMascarilla," which translates to "Metropolitano with a mask," urging Atletico fans to wear masks during the game to conceal their identities while engaging in racist abuse.
The league emphasized that it plans to formally report the individuals behind this campaign, as their actions constitute incitement to hatred—a criminal offense as outlined in the Penal Code. LaLiga condemned the hateful actions that threaten not only the reputation of football and Spain as a whole but also jeopardize the safety and well-being of all attendees at the matches.
Previous incidents have highlighted the ongoing problem of racism in Spanish football, including charges against four Atletico fans for hanging an effigy of Vinicius from a bridge, and a previous conviction of three Valencia fans for racially motivated hate crimes. Furthermore, LaLiga's commitment to addressing such issues was demonstrated in March when Real Madrid lodged a complaint concerning alleged racist chanting by Atletico fans. Additionally, the Spanish Football Federation has had to penalize Atletico Madrid by partially closing their southern stand due to instances of racist behavior directed at other players.
