China expresses disapproval of Ishiba's Taiwan visit
China has voiced strong opposition to Japanese politicians visiting Taiwan, specifically mentioning Shigeru Ishiba's August visit to the island. This statement reflects China's concerns about growing cooperation between Japan and Taiwan, particularly in light of Ishiba's national security policy that emphasizes deterrence against China.
Ishiba, a former LDP secretary general, met with Taiwan President Lai Ching-te during his visit. China considers Lai an "independence worker" and views his meeting with Ishiba with suspicion. Ishiba's proposal for an Asian version of NATO further raises concerns in China, as it suggests a potential shift in Japan's security posture.
While China refrained from directly criticizing Ishiba, stating that the LDP election is Japan's internal affair, they will undoubtedly monitor his policies closely, especially considering Prime Minister Kishida's recent deployment of a Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer to the Taiwan Strait.
Within China, some expressed relief that Sanae Takaichi, known for her hard-line stance against China and her intention to visit Yasukuni Shrine, lost the LDP election. An expert quoted in The Global Times, affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party's official newspaper, described Ishiba's policies as "more balanced and moderate" compared to Takaichi's.
Meanwhile, Taiwan's Foreign Affairs Ministry celebrated Ishiba's victory on social media, noting his willingness to participate in the LDP election during his August visit. They expressed hope for increased cooperation between Japan and Taiwan, aiming to build a closer relationship and protect the peace and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific region.
