Israel Launches Preemptive Attack on Lebanon, Causing Widespread Devastation
On Monday, Israel launched a massive preemptive attack on Lebanon, citing Hezbollah's rocket attacks as justification. This operation, reminiscent of the Pearl Harbor attack, resulted in the carpet-bombing of over 1,600 targets across the country, including the capital, Beirut.
The devastating attack has left a trail of destruction and casualties. As of now, the Lebanese Health Ministry reports 558 people killed and at least 1,835 wounded, including 50 children and 94 women. This grim toll continues to rise as rescue efforts progress.
This latest escalation follows a series of events that have heightened tensions in the region. Last week, intensive attacks using pagers and hand-held radios killed 84 people and wounded hundreds, many critically. This was followed by the assassination of Hezbollah's second-in-command military chief on Saturday.
Israel claims its actions are necessary to deter what it describes as the "genocide" in Gaza and to prevent further attacks from Hezbollah. However, the scale and intensity of the operation have drawn widespread condemnation from the international community.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended Israel's actions, stating that the country is not waiting for threats but preempting them. He also emphasized Israel's right and duty to defend itself, citing the storage and launch of missiles by Hezbollah in civilian areas.
President Isaac Herzog echoed these sentiments, highlighting the threat posed by Hezbollah's actions. He shared a video produced by the Israel Defense Forces, showcasing the presence of missiles in civilian homes.
In an attempt to minimize civilian casualties, the IDF infiltrated 80,000 cellphones of Lebanese residents, transmitting evacuation messages. Additionally, they jammed the Voice of Lebanon and took control of the network to broadcast warnings.
The international community has called for a ceasefire to prevent further escalation and allow for a peaceful resolution. U.S. President Joe Biden and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin have expressed support for Israel's right to defend itself while urging de-escalation.
The situation in the Middle East remains volatile, and the consequences of this latest conflict are yet to be fully understood. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely and calls for a swift and peaceful resolution.
