A new pair of pandas from mainland China will be arriving in Hong Kong on Thursday and will be housed at the Ocean Park. The pandas are expected to meet the public in December of this year.
The new pandas are a gift from the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Sichuan Province. They will undergo a 30-day quarantine at the Ocean Park upon their arrival. Experts will then assess their condition and determine when they can be exhibited to the public.
The new pandas are a male named An An and a female named Ke Ke. An An was born in June 2019 and weighs over 130 kilograms. He is described as an agile, smart, and active boy with an outgoing and lively temperament. Ke Ke was also born in June 2019 and weighs 100 kilograms. She is described as having a gentle temperament but is also lively and active. She is skilled at climbing and is considered a "tomboy" in the world of giant pandas.
The Hong Kong government and Ocean Park have made preparations to help the pandas adapt to their new environment. Ocean Park has transported bamboo from Guangdong Province to the Dujiangyan base in advance to help the pandas adjust to the bamboo they will eat in Hong Kong.
The China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda and the Ocean Park have signed a cooperation agreement to continue collaborative efforts in giant panda conservation and research. The agreement includes cooperation in areas such as breeding management, reproductive research, disease prevention, science popularization education, and cultural promotion.
