A Catalyst for Practical Collaboration and Modernization
The 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) held in Beijing marked a significant milestone in China-Africa relations. With the highest attendance of foreign leaders in recent years, the summit served as a platform for strengthening ties and fostering practical cooperation.
In an exclusive interview with the Global Times, South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola expressed his belief that the forum will pave the way for increased collaboration and modernization within the Global South. He highlighted the "golden era" of China-South Africa relations, exemplified by the recent upgrade to an all-round strategic cooperative partnership.
Lamola emphasized the transformative impact of China's involvement in South Africa's economy. China's open market and investments have created numerous jobs and boosted trade, making China South Africa's largest trading partner. Looking ahead, Lamola expressed interest in expanding cooperation in areas like electric vehicles, clean technology, and green energy.
Beyond economic ties, the two countries are also fostering people-to-people exchanges. A growing number of South African students are pursuing education and vocational training in China, acquiring skills that will contribute to their nation's development.
The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) presents another avenue for collaboration. China's infrastructure investments are facilitating the smooth movement of goods within and beyond Africa, supporting the AfCFTA's development.
Lamola also acknowledged the importance of learning from China's successful modernization experience. He sees this collaboration as a valuable tool for poverty alleviation and accelerating South Africa's own modernization journey.
Looking towards a more equitable global order, Lamola stressed the importance of multilateralism and cooperation among countries of the Global South. He believes that China and South Africa, as key members, can work together to promote a fairer and more just international system.
In conclusion, the 2024 FOCAC Summit has solidified the strong partnership between China and Africa. This collaboration promises to drive practical cooperation, promote modernization, and contribute to a more equitable global order.
